There’s no better time than when launching a brand new website to re introduce myself – hello! I’m Charlotte, the founder of Manchester based lifestyle brand, Calico Collective. I’ll be sharing an abundance of lovely articles in the coming months, sharing the stories of fellow business owners, my top tips for making & much more!

An introduction to Calico Collective

Hello & welcome to Calico Collective. I’m Charlotte –  founder, maker, coffee shop enthusiastic and all round supporter of small, independent businesses! Everything that you see here on our website, from the hand crafted products to the content on this very blog, is made, designed & written by me.

So, where to start on my first ever blog post? Now feels like a good opportunity to reflect upon my ‘business journey’ since opening back in February 2020 and share a few insights into where I’ve been, where I am and where I’m going. Calico Collective was born our of my love of using my hands to create something physical. I have always thrived off of the immense satisfaction of seeing something come to life through your own creativity, and also love to be busy! I found myself in a pretty fortunate position back in the first COVID-19 lockdown, I was on furlough and home alone, looking for a way to entertain myself.

The journey began with lino printing, which quickly evolved into polymer clay jewellery making, which led me to Jesmonite. I’d heard of the material whilst on my degree (any Theatre Designers out there?) and couldn’t resist grabbing a starter kit to have a go myself.

Let’s rewind a little – I am, and always have been, a pottery enthusiast. I had dabbled in hand building during A Level art, but that had never quite satisfied my desire to learn such a beautiful craft. Back to 2020, I decided to try my hand at casting with jesmonite as a more accessible alternative to ceramics, and here we are years later, still making beautiful, earthy toned, cast homewares with an incredibly versatile material.

Celebrating every moment, big & small.

My product range has evolved over the years to mostly include just homewares now, with the occasional print & jewellery collection launches too. I’m incredibly proud to say that this now includes a range of ceramics as well! There’s been so many ups and downs in the past 4.5 years of running Calico Collective, but each and every decision I’ve made has led me to where I am today, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

It’s not often that I take a moment to reflect on the incredible things that Calico Collective has allowed me to do, but with the launch of this new website I’ve been reminiscing over some of my favourite moments: a collaboration with Spotify, showcasing my work in over 30 stockists across the UK, Europe & USA, hosting workshops all across the country, trading at artisan markets regularly and most recently, hosting two successful pop up shops of my own in West Didsbury, Manchester. The list goes on, and I really am very proud of each and every one of my achievements, big & small.

Say hello to our blog!

This blog is going to be a place for me to share some of these big (and small) moments, going forward. From showcasing some of my favourite independent businesses in the ‘Small Business Stories’, to sharing plenty of behind the scenes moments for ‘In The Making’, to promoting upcoming launches and limited edition runs in the ‘Collections’ section. There will also be a ‘Travel Diaries’ series for sharing my favourite coffee shops, city guides, beach trips & getaways, as well as a regular Gift Guides featured in the ‘Gift Inspiration’ posts. I’m often asked what it’s like to run an independent business, so hopefully this will give a little insight into the day to day behind the scenes!

I’d love for this to be a space where we can share ideas, discuss any difficulties and form a community of small business resources! If you have any ideas for blog posts, or you’d like to be features in any of the series’, please get in ouch at [email protected].
